Advancing social science research on abortion: demographic methods and perspectives
December 6, 2023 - December 8, 2023
Steering Committee: Leslie Root, Amanda Stevenson, Jane Menken, Sara Yeatman, Stefanie Mollborn, Katie Genadek
Location: Hybrid, online and in-person at CU Population Center, Institute of Behavioral Science, University of Colorado Boulder
Since the Supreme Court ended the era of the federally protected right to abortion with their decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health in June 2022, there has been increasing interest in the social sciences in studying abortion and related topics in reproductive health.
We are pleased to announce a workshop for graduate students and early-career researchers who are newer to the field of reproductive health and committed to advancing the social science of abortion in the U.S. using demographic methods. The target audience for this workshop has a strong quantitative background, some familiarity with demography, and relatively little experience working with abortion data.
The meeting will feature:
- training in demographic methods that can be applied to abortion research
- talks by leading scholars presenting exciting new directions in demographic research on abortion
- opportunities to engage in scholarly community through a workshop Slack and virtual follow-up meetings where small groups of participants can develop and present research
The workshop application is available here. We aim to make decisions by mid-October, so for full consideration, please submit by Monday, October 9th.
This workshop is funded by the University of Colorado Population Center (CUPC), and further benefits from administrative, research, and/or computing support through the CUPC, funded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development of the National Institutes of Health (P2CHD066613). The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH, CUPC, or the University of Colorado.
